#1: Artois
The first chapter of Mixtumq, Vol. 1: The Death of Artois, which will be published by Rat World & Selcouthbird Press sometime in 2025. #1 was originally released with 12 pages at Auckland Zinefest 2022, then with 16 pages in SPECK #1, and finally, with 24 pages at Auckland Zinefest 2023.
#2: People Plant Plans
The second chapter focuses on Artois’ estranged partner, Unikal Omdanne. A shapeshifter dubbed “The Face-Thief” by society, they spend their time running a nursery for Dragon-Chickens deep underground – and Artois hasn’t seen them in quite a while. Meanwhile, “The String-Puller” is making plans for something. Something that involves Artois, her birth name, and a knife.
COMING EARLY 2024
#3: Inquisitorealities
The third chapter is an odd one, and the one I’m most excited for so far. Erkil Elkin, the Immortal Turtle, runs a bigger-on-the-inside shop of magical miscellany named Inquisitorealities.
In it, Artois meets The Journal, God of the Material Plane. All the while bounty posters are being printed with her face on them – and a name she hasn’t seen attached to herself since she was a toddler.
COMING LATE 2024
#1: Daze, Dog, Door
A 24-page comic I made in 2020. An exploration of gender-identity in a post-apocalyptic, purgatorial desertscape. It was first drawn as a storyboard for the animated film I made for my first year of my Bachelor of Animation course. That short film is available HERE.
#2: Birds, Brunch, Balls
#3: Smoke, Spillway, See-Ya!
Scenes from a short film I started in my third year of my animation degree informed this third and final part of the story. Coming to peace with my own gender identity has let me get to the point where the idea for this even exists. I can’t believe now that when i first drew Transience #1 – I thought it was fiction.
COMING MID 2024
F33L
A 6-page comic about creative block, deadlines, and having story ideas that you haven’t thought through – while I get berated by my own fictional characters again.
So, Rat World Wants You to…Make a Graphic Novel
A 4-page comic where I struggle to decide which graphic novel idea to make, battle my high expectations for productivity, and argue with the protagonist about the content of her story.
Who’d’ve Thought Cam Had A.D.H.D.?
A 4-page comic of my experiences pursuing an ADHD diagnosis and access to medication treatment in New Zealand.
Kelly Tarlton’s 2002 / Valentine’s Day 2004
Two short stories from my neurodivergent childhood. In one I spiral into existential dread as a misunderstanding leads me to think that penguins are 6-foot-four. In the other a good-natured cupid-moment teaches me the consequences of lying to 5-year-olds with dyslexia.
Beep Beep
A 4-page comic exploring my spiralling daily anxiety, and my aversion to looking at my phone.
Thyme
A 4-page comic I made for the first issue of Rat World, repurposing pages from Transience #1 and an abstract page from a sketchbook that I had lying around. It became an exploration of how time hasn’t quite worked the same since the lockdowns in 2020.
